Does anyone know how to tell the difference between male & female pigeons, magpies and crows?

Jay,According to all my bird books, there is no differance at all in the sexes of Pigeons, Magpies and Crows.

In other birds the male, eg Blackbird are usually a differant colour, but in a lot of them, both sexes are exactly the same.Sorry.

Daft question I know but why did you want to know the difference?
It's the male on top when they're ........
As jay says they are the same by normal viewing.
Why some birds have different sex colours and some don't is a mystery. [IMG]

I am not sure, but I think the differant colours in males is mainly due for mating purposes.
In a females eyes, the males with the brightest plumage, and loudest song in the attraction stakes, is more likely to have better prospects than a drab boring male. It's survival of the fittest.

Think of the Human species.Woman are going to be attracted to the smartest fittest male than one who is unfit and unkempt.

In which case, birds with the same plumage have nothing to be particularly attracted by, maybe the song distinguishes the male. [IMG]
