    image.jpg Has anyone els had ago at growing a avocado ? I belive you can't grow them in the uk ? Not sure what to do next - ie plant in soil ? Any help would be great - thanks in advance x

    Don't think it'll survive the winter in the uk, might be wrong though @pete would probably know.

    They need to be grafted to bear fruit :spinning:

    We used to grow them but they are tender plants and can't be outside in the cold (summer's Ok).

    Some of our plants used to last between five and eight years as houseplants. I have found them growing quite happily in our compost heaps. :rolleyespink:

      Yes, it needs to be potted up if its to survive for long.

      Not heard of many surviving outside in the UK, but I seem to remember hearing about a few sizeable trees in front gardens in London.
      Possibly other places, I think light frost, and I mean light, is bearable for them if they get some heat in summer.
      That is of course once the plant gets some acclimatization and a few years growth, not seedlings.
      You wont find them growing in my compost heap, cant stand the things.:biggrin:

            A nice ripe one tastes lovely :blue thumb:. Making a homemade guacamole is excellent and sliced avocado laid on top of a chicken casserole (cooked with herbs, garlic, and orange juice and wine) for the last five minutes of cooking is pretty good.

              I have recently eaten avocado in a salad made with quinoa (dark and light), cashew nuts, rocket salad, dark beans and salmon...it is not a taste or a texture that I like particularly, but I don't mind eating it on the light of the fact that it is healthy.
