I found several in our polytunnel at work a few weeks ago the same size and was surprised that they had been born so late, they should hibernate in a month or so and will have to put on some weight to survive. Yours looks ok and now needs a good slug diet.

 

I found one the other day, it seemed .......very, ...well, slow.
Which I presume was due to the low temperature.

It just managed to wriggle under some stones.

Are all over as far as I know John, cant remember not seeing at least a couple a year.

They really like warm compost heaps to overwinter in.

I dont think they like "tidy" gardens.:D

 

Out of our six native reptiles, four of them, Slow Worm, Viviparous (Common) Lizard, Grass Snake and Adder have the widest distribution of all European reptiles. All are absent from Ireland and the Viviparous Lizard's range stretches up to the top of Scandinavia.
Slow Worms can be found throughout England, Wales and Scotland except the Northern Isles.

So Yeah look where you tread as they are a gardeners friend eating small slugs and snails.:thumb:

Shame Walnut, a warm polytunnel is just the place to keep warm and give birth (for Slow Worms that is).
