Does anyone with a clue what they are doing know what has happened to my beans? Stunted growth, curled leaves and rust.

Too late in the season, they always get rust.
    Better planting early.

I usually think of broad beans as an early crop.
I dont grow much veg now but for years I grew them late feb in pots, planted out in March and finished by late July.
Biggest problem at that time of the year are black fly, but you beat the rust.

They were never going to do well, I just plugged the seeds in the ground in the spring. A lot of the leaves curled in on themselves, you can see some in the background of the photo, what do you think caused that?

Dont know why the leaves are curled.
But like peas, they are more susceptible to all kinds of problems later in the season.

I found Broad beans troublesome if I planted in the Spring.. I plant straight into the ground in the Autumn and get a much better crop, not too troubled by blackfly either @RoryG .. I have tried different varieties but Aquadulce are the ones I plant all the time..

Hi @RoryG in that case up there I would still plant November time and fleece them up if weather is severe.. Otherwise they take about 4 weeks to germinate if not freezing.. They are very hardy but susceptible when just breaking ground..

Just as a thought, you get white and green seeded varieties, the white ones are considered hardier, but often people prefer the green ones.

Which I why I always grew my green seeded ones in pots in feb, under cover, and planted out in late March/ early April.
They pretty much catch up the overwintered ones if planted out at around 4 to 5ins tall.

Yes Aquadulce are white bean but I don’t let them get big I like them small and sweet when I pick..

Maybe @RoryG you could try growing yours the same way as @pete if you get it very cold and wet.. ;)
