Saw these beautiful plants while on a walk this morning. The first was growing very vigorously, about 6-8 inches tall, and covered with bees. The second was a tall shrubby plant, and the flowers had a strong, pungent smell. It stood about 3-4 feet tall and was very elegant. Not got very far with identifying them, but they were both lovely. I'm sure the experts here will be able to help me

I think the one on the left is an echium - certainly very popular with bees - but hopefully someone else can give a firm identification.

The one on the right is sambucus nigra f. porphyrolla, aka Black Lace or Black Elder.

Thank you Clare. The flowers on the second one did make me think of elder. I'll have to get some echiums for the bees. Many thanks!
