I've been having problems sleeping recently - stiff neck - quite painful at night.

The Doctor has told me today that it's just 'wear and tear' for someone of my age, and suggested I take some painkillers before I go to bed.

    I'm 50.

What the heck is it going to be like when I'm 60? (assuming I make it to 60 that is) - and the government expects me to work until I'm 67 - I'll have fallen apart by then.

I am of a similar age, and have health issues.
I worry about the future (pension etc), but I don't know why. I certainly won't ever see it.

:heehee: Know what you mean, clanless! Over here we have 'rebouteurs'...sort of cross between faith healers and osteopaths/chiropractors. They are truly wonderful! All the niggly aches and pains that modern medecine dismisses with a prescription for painkillers are sorted out with a twist of a wrist or 'KKRRRK' of your spine. You make a donation if you feel that they have helped...
It might be worth looking into alternatives in your area, even if you have to pay? A good night's sleep is priceless!

I'm 60 and it dont get any better, I'm wondering if my back will last out another 6 yrs, Been trying to get it sorted for nearly two years now.
They just say its worn out, but getting anything done is an uphill struggle, although there are treatments available.

My advice is, if you have a real problem, (and not just a bit of muscle ache which usually goes on its own), is dont bother with physio, it dont work, or chiropractors they just take your money, and lead you on.

I used to worry about the future - not anymore. I've taken a lower paid part time job and now have time to do what I want to do. As they say, you can't buy more time (or buy buckets of health!).

I have some sympathy for those who still think that material things like job status, salary, expensive houses and cars are important - they're not. In the end it all boils down to time with family and friends.

I'll take the paracetamol and look forward to a good ramble tomorrow :dbgrtmb:

My Doctor had booked me for some physiotherapy - a little odd I thought - she mentioned exercises to stretch my neck. Of course, in my time quite a few people have wanted to stretch my neck - and they weren't physio therapists!:snork:

Well I am 70, almost, and my neck is definitely going. Try acupuncture, it works for me. Or. Try a prescription strength ketoprofen gel to rub in. That also works for me. The over the counter stuff is not a lot of use, but if you can get Powergel from your Doc, that is great or one called Movelat is equally valid.

That could well be true in the UK, pete, but the ones over here don't charge anything..the donations are purely voluntary if you feel that they've helped. Legend has it that if they demand money for exercising their 'gift', they'll lose it! I've been to three, now, and each time they sorted out in seconds things that had been a real misery for months...

They say that life begins at forty. It certainly did for me, I started with a bad back, a bad knee and a bad ankle. I am 72 now and only the ankle still gives me trouble. I sympathise with you if you are not sleeping well, that's the one thing I would find really hard to cope with.

Interesting, because the ones over here year would starve if I had my way.

I spent over a year going to a private clinic with them telling me they could sort out the problem.
At one point they suggested that I attended twice a week for a month at £37 for 30 mins treatment.
Needless to say I eventually told them I'd had enough, at which point they offered me one free session with an experienced Chiropractor.
I told them where to go.

I had sessions of private Physio for 3 months prior to that while waiting for the NHS to get their act together.
NHS physio consisted of 10mins talking to me and 10 mins rubbing my back on six sessions at which point they said go back to your GP who gave me some stuff to rub in which was worse than useless.

I am in better shape now than when I was 50. I had a desk job. Long sessions with the mouse made my neck extremely sore. I got tennis elbow in both arms, at the same time:ouch1:

I quit that job, used some of those skills to start my own business. One where I am much more physically active. I feel great. Yes, we all get strains once in awhile but constant sore neck ? Not good. Check you work ergonomics. Might help.
