My cottage has a belfast sink, I am always careful when I am washing up and crockery usually lasts me a very long time in fact I get fed up with it before it breaks, but since living here I have chipped/broken more china than I can believe!!!! I understand these are gaining popularity again, but WHY???? it is a friggin nightmare, I am now buying a plastic bowl which fits inside but surely that defeats the object?? the plastic bowl will eventually become scratched and won't be as clean/hygienic as the sink itself. Anyone else own one of these sinks from hell!!!!!! :snork:

    Blimey!
Saw this thread title and thought Northern Ireland had been hit by some terrible natural disaster.
What's a Belfast sink by the way?

That sink alone would put me off buying the house it was placed in. I think they are awful. Which is why they were replaced with a washing up bowl. I think we can become paranoic about so called "germs" in the kitchen. I can't remember the last time that I had an upset stomach.
I like to keep my soldiers in training, not lolling around in the Mess playing cards,

I see. One of those big deep ceramic jobs then?

I've got a couple of those. In the garden.

Several years ago I rescued a couple of those big, deep old sinks from a school science lab, (it was being chucked out when they were refurbishing the school).
Simply dug a big hole, sunk them in and filled them. They make great mini ponds for wildlife. :)

I love them me, yes, they are nuclear weapons to anything pottery, but they are sooooo nice. Easy to clean, don't scratch like stainless steel and are so today.
