Just had to share this with you.
This poignant advert by Iceland for Christmas has been banned from TV because of political connotations ,made by Greenpeace.
But I do get it..........Do you?

Just one more thing that points out to me the planet contains too many humans.

I totally get it @roders . But it's not just the forests - I've been banging on for years about the African land grabs.

Yup. It's high time that governments stopped handing out benefits for children and started taxing people more as they have more children. Not popular I know, but it needs to be done. The problem is that big business is based on the population increasing.

I understand your points of view, guys, but aren't we missing the point of the advert?:dunno: It's about the decimation of Forests, land, and the Orangutans habitat, and the misuse of the natural environment by Global Corporations in their "Bean Counters" blind desire to make sure the "bottom line" looks good. It looks like the TV Companies have preferred to keep their high paying global clients happy rather than defend the environment by saying they're adhering to the Broadcast code of "an ad is prohibited if it is directed towards a political end". To me, the advert is not political but about stopping the extinction of animal species. But, of course, Big Money will always talk louder with a TV companies advertising revenue and connected Politicians.:wallbanging::snorky:

I'm not sure how it can be political as it is just putting over a message.
If Greenpeace want to latch onto it then I can see where there could possibly be a problem.

Personally I dont have much time for Greenpeace.

The point of the advert is that it is just a tag line to sell stuff. I noticed that they have only stopped selling own brand products with palm oil, not any product with palm oil.
But no, the destruction of forests for food is no different to the African land grabs for food. Yes, the Orangutan looks cuddly but there are species of spider, beetle etc that are also dying out with the forests and the river deltas. The ape is just an appealing face being used by Greenpeace (who I do have a lot of time for) to highlight what is going on - good for PR if you like.
Anyway, it would have been nice to see an advert that made people think about the bigger picture, especially at christmas.

Agreed, but it's environmental message was/is strong enough to point the finger at Global Corporations and put them in the spotlight of environmental abuse that caused the TV companies to bow to their pressures of banning the advert:dunno:

That depends on whether or not you're measuring the scale of the two situations as, globally, the destruction of forestation is far bigger than African land grabs although both have the same effect on the environment.:dunno:

Agreed, but the plight of the Orangutan has deepened dramatically in the last 3 years and that has made it's extinction even more real. I'm not sure I would like a "cuddle" from a full grown Orangutan:dunno::heehee: But you're right it is more photogenic as a image to make a stronger message about the dangers of Man's continuing abuse of resources. I doubt whether the strength of the advert would have been as high if it had been a Dung Beetle being highlighted.:dunno::whistle::heehee:

God, pete, the Politicians bombard us with "messages" every day using every resource and media channels they can, but any message that upsets commercial organisations will be termed "political" by them:coffee:

I think Iceland went off message . Namely Christmas is supposed to be about consuming as much low quality chocolate as you can cram into your intestines, drinking too excess, pretending your all having a great time devouring overpriced average Christmas dinners and maxing out your credit cards.

So keep on message people, consume consume consume and for god sake dont mention the planet going to hell or the economy being on a cliff edge again.

                        Merry Christmas....
