Everyone in our household has had a disgusting puking lurgy over the last few days. Luckily not all in one go so at least there's been one functioning adult to look after all of us.

Today we're all about better, but as I was the last to be struck down, I'm also the last to reach 100% normality.

So we've been eating foods that help lurgy recovery.

While I was dehydrating, unable to keep anything down, I had endless cravings for citrus fruit. Obviously citrus fruits are high in water content but I think it must have been more than that. I was specifically craving citrus fruit. Oddly, the grapefruit and two oranges I ate stayed put when nothing else did.

But today, I'm mostly fine, but a bit delicate. So it's still easy food.

Here's my favourite lurgy fix meal, which also happens to be delicious.

    Rice, peas and fish.

One cup of basmati, then either one cup of strong lemon and ginger tea or half ginger wine and half water. This is the liquid for the rice to cook in.

Some garden peas, some white fish like cod or haddock or any such non-fatty fish. You only need a bit of fish, cut into strips. It all goes in with the rice. Then half a teaspoon of turmeric and a pinch of black pepper. A pinch of salt to taste.

Steam it all for 25 minutes.

At this point, if you're very delicate, it's done, but if your on the mend....

One egg in a tiny bit of oil, sort of fried and scrambled. Then chuck in the rice with it and keep it moving until there are no obvious clumps. Then it's done.

Delicious, good balance of nutrients, and easy to digest.

Reminds me of the Portuguese dish Bacalhau a Bras which my t'other has weekly, except it is made with potatoes. He would probably prefer it with rice ... must suggest that!

      Bacalhau à Bras

Hope you and the family all recuperate and have a healthy New Year.

Without a doubt, home made chicken soup :dbgrtmb:

It's known world wide as a cure for ailments (no medical proof but apochryphal) and certainly tastes good and warms the 'cockles of your heart'. It has a nickname in Western society of 'Jewish Penicillin' and is listed as such in the Urban Dictionary and even mentioned in Wiki.

Apart from that we, as children, used to be given white fish, boiled in milk, with potatoes and served in a bowl with big chunks of butter floating on top of the milk. Sometimes sliced onions were added (I didn't like that).

Nowadays I've become a little more sophisticated but it depends on how I feel. A nice home made curry with lots of rice is my favourite but I need to be at least fit enough to do the cooking. I generally feel a lot better whilst concentrating on cooking.
