    Hi All

Not much left of summer :sunny::cry3:

But we all love autumn as well:dbgrtmb:

I was just wondering what the best bit of gardening info you have had off here.

Mine was from Armandii , realy simple..... "why hadnt I thought of it"

a rat had pinched lots of labels (I saw with my own eyes) out of my named agapanthus pots and Armandii told me write the name on the pot SIMPLES or what

I'm embarrassed now, Spruce, so I'll have to go down to the pond and sit with a glass of wine.
To be honest, my wife and I came to that solution when sowing and potting on seedlings in the early years. Some of our kids had 10 minutes of being unsupervised and had a great time taking out the labels and burying them in the sandpit. I can remember standing there looking at all the pots with my wife and thinking never again! We both looked at each other and said at the same time "Pots, write on them" and burst into laughter. We spent the rest of the day trying to guess and remember what was in the hundreds of pots and writing on them, and we didn't get it all right.

Ziggy's right, the terrific advice we get from everyone on the Forum due to their experiences, successes and failures has been a boon, and I'm glad to be here.

My wife used to advise other gardeners who avidly read their gardening books and stuck rigidly to the instructions not to do so. "Rules are not supposed to rule you, but are for bending and ignoring when your head tells you so" was a favourite saying She was once told by a seasoned gardener "Once you plant a Paeonie you mustn't move it, they don't like being moved. Our Paeonies and other plants needed suitcases because she moved them so much!! If a plant didn't look happy where it was, even though the book said it shoiuld, it got moved until it responded to the site.

I've had tons of useful info from here, its hard to pick out one example.

One thing that stands out and is still fresh in my mind (and doing my garden wonders) is Ziggy's recommendation of using spent mushroom compost as a cheap way to sort out my completely done in, starved, compacted clay. Its cheaper than general purpose compost, and has more nutrients in it, and one shipment of 300 litres of the stuff has sorted out all my garden soil woes.

My best piece of gardening knowledge is: Its all about the SOIL. If its treetreetreetree soil dig out most of it and put in the good stuff. Then start planting.
2nd piece of knowledge is, look around find want is native to your area, those plants WILL be successful in your garden. 3RD piece, it does not happen overnight. A good garden takes about 14 years to get perfect. Gather books etc, and go slowly and plan out with diagrams etc.

I keep seeing this term 'treetreetreetree' but only on this forum. What does it mean please? Or is it a bug in the system substituting certain words?

I thank you, sincerely, for this piece of info. I've been beating myself up and getting wound up about the fact that in year 2 of tackling my new back garden (which was so dire that the estate agent refused to show us it, lying that he didn't have the back door key with him), and it still has a long way to go. It is now useable, and has a lawn, play area for my son, and patio for the wife and I and occasional guests but there's still a lot to do. I'd been thinking I should have had it done in about 6 months from the start.
