I'd like to know where the best place to buy trees is. I don't necessarily want specific names, but wonder if there are places (other than garden centres) that sell good quality specimens. I live in Gtr. Manchester and was thinking of buying another 'pineapple' tree (cytisus), after my husband destroyed our other one:gaah:, many years ago.

Yes there are many specialist nurseries that grow trees and shrubs. Have a look in garden magazines or google. The RHS have a plant finder that will give a list of suppliers and contact details. Many do mail order, but you should be able to find someone fairly local that you can pick up from.

Thank you for that, Nigel J.

Landimad, ours was definitely a tree (and really lovely), but yes, I know you can get a shrub variety. They look nothing like each other, except for (possibly) a similarity in the shape of the flowers. It had just a trunk over six feet high, not 'bushy' at all.

Hi @landimad , you've got the wrong plant there. Cytisus Scoparius is common Broom .... a shrub.

Cytisus Battandieri is a semi evergreen tree from Morocco.

I've ordered from a few online places. Maybe I've been lucky, but so far they've all been pretty good. The main thing with online ordering is that you do have to accept they will have been in the post for a day or two, and they may have been waiting another day or two for pickup, so you need to be ready to give them a good soaking as soon as they arrive on your doorstep. And if you're not going to be home, make sure the delivery guy can put them somewhere which isn't in a sun trap, otherwise they might end up cooking in the box on your driveway. The only time I've ever lost anything, it was because I'd not dealt with it immediately.

I don't know if they have your cytisus, but I was pleased with all three trees I bought last autumn from Mail Order Trees. Crab apple Laura, rowan Autumn Spire, and Sambuca Black Tower; all nice well-grown specimens, sent promptly and well packed.
