Thought it might be an idea to start a thread solely dedicated to bird photos that GC members have taken. A bit like birdwatching but from the comfort of your computer chair.

People could post pics as they see birds and I would suggest they include date and location of where the bird was seen.

Then we could gradually compile a bird spotting list of what bird is where and it could be a challenge for folks to add new birds to the list all the time, or indeed do multiple pics of the same bird type if they were particularly good shots!

    What do you think?

All contributions welcome as long as they have wings and beaks!

Sounds obvious, but it must really be photos you have taken yourself!

If you sight something but can't manage to photo it - please use this thread to report it, but I'll only check things off the list we have a photo for, just to up the anti a bit!

    Can I start us off?

    EGYPTIAN GOOSE.

    Hi Cookie

I don't know much about birds but enjoy taking photos of them when I can. I don't always know what they are. Can I still put up photos of them? Does it only have to be birds in this country? I also have photos of birds from different countries.

    Hi Shiney!

Of course you can still put photos up of birds you have seen, even if you are not sure of the identity - post the pic and everyone can have a good look and come up with suggestions about what they think it is. If we all agree (!!!) then it can go on the check off list and you get that bird as koudos! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

This is not a really official serious thing - come on - coming from Cookie?!? No, it is a pleasurable thing which more than anything is a celebration of birds and to encourage people to take an interest in snapping them and identifying them for a little challenge. I think a long running thread like this would make a really nice thing to look at on those long wintry nights!

For the keener Ornys among us, it will make an interesting log of what is going on where. It doesn't matter how many pics of the same type of bird we get either. If we get 100s of sparrow pics, but they are all as different and entertaining as say "Bottoms Up" was in the recent competition, well so much the better!

Other than British?? Hadn't thought of that - but what a great idea - lets get LOL, Kedi and Penny from Ontario and any other of our GC members abroad showing us their birds. Or, if you have been on safari or down to Chester Zoo, show us photos of them too - I'll create an extra heading in the check off list section - "Europe" and "Rest of the World".

Thanks for your interest Shiney and I hope people see this as a bit of fun, nothing too heavy!

Now for some of our pheasants. They spend many hours each day in the garden and pick up food under the bird feeder.

Brill Shiney! Thanks - all your entries are added to the list.

It would be great if people could give us a rough idea of the location in the UK where the birds were seen and the time of year (approx, if they were taken a while ago)

And don't forget, we can have more robins and woodpeckers and green finches etc from other people too - Nutty, those robin shots you did were Ace!

Also, if someone posts a chick - don't forget we will want pics of the adults too, as sometimes there is a huge difference! Male and females too!

PPS Shiney - that young male pheasant looks like he has been through the washing machine on too high a spin!!!!

Strongy - lets be 'avin yer spoonbills!

Rosa - get the 3 Stooges in here!

    Thanks for looking everyone!

Oh they're gorgeous! SO lucky to have all those birds around you! Near me its like the cat ghetto and only the most daring of birds come through. That being said, our neighbours keep poultry and folks behind us keep doves.

Am hoping to drag Darren out to Dawlish Warren reserve soon for some photography, and then we can grab some chips and time in the arcade :D

So lucky with your little pheasant family, they're beautiful.

    Hi Whiley,
Unfortunately, Oscar the cat has just eaten our pair of collared doves

He and the pheasants seem to have a mutual respect for each other (after a lot of puffing up and loud screeches last year) and they ignore each other now.
