    Hi,

We have a 10 year + Blackberry, if we remember correctly its Merton Thornless and it gives us superb fruit each year.

However due to some building works we have to move it in a couple of months, hopefully just after the harvest ; the question is will it transplant ok ? perhaps loosing a years fruit if we have to trim this years new shoots ?

Equally, no idea how long such a plant will continue to fruit well, is there an age when replacement is wise ?

Either way, probably buy a container one soon and grow that on in a large pot, just in case to old one does not make it.

    1. Although black berry bushes are hardy autumn is best to move them but if you got to move it now dig a big hole all round bush and take as many roots AND soil as possible and then place in a well manured (old rotted) hole and water well and firm soil.. and keep damp.
Best done when rain expected. Also you could take cuttings and put them into a tub for now if you're not quite sure/ready and if the bush should die, which is doughtful then you can plant the cuttings into the space Black berry can last up to 20 years

Ah, just never thought about taking cuttings... ?!

Would have thought taking cuttings from the new years shoots better than the established fruiting spurs, though no idea how quick or easy they are to get going ?

Might also be worth getting a 3 ltr pot grown one from a good nursery just to be sure.
      Are Mcintryes any good ?

Blackcurrants are one of the easiest plants to grow from cuttings. The success rate is more than 50%, they need no protection or care when growing from cuttings and the process of cutting the stems is easy
, October is a good time to take blackcurrant cuttings.
