Agreed BG, they are easily overlooked simply because they are one of our most common garden birds.
I've often thought the blackbird, with it's lovely melodic song helps to brighten up the dark days of mid-winter. They are often the first to be heard before dawn and the last to carry on singing well after dark, even in the depths of January.
Somehow, waking up well before it gets light on a cold, dark winter morning is never quite so bad when one of these chaps is singing lustily outside your bedroom window.
I keep my surplus apples in my (unheated) greenhouse over the winter and chuck a few out on the grass for the birds every so often, especially when there's snow on the ground.
This usually attracts plenty of blackbirds, along with the odd thrush, fiedlfare and redwing. It's fascinating to watch the competition among them for this unexpected bounty.

      Thanks Trunky
I agree that blackbirds are robust singers and they do keep you awake but in the nicest way
I will go by your suggestion to what to feed them in the colder months and would love to see other birds feeding too

They love digging up a certain bit of my plot, where I emptied the worm bin last year, can't plant seedlings there:DOH: They have them straight out.

Nice that the Blackbirds eat the worms, but a pain if they eat your young plants
They will be after the worms in the earth no doubt

Mrs pip feeds our regular blackbirds sultanas, not only do they love them but they respond to the sound of the tin rattling.
