This came from my grandmother's house when she died in the 1970s , I think it might go back a fair bit before then.
I'm wondering what it might have been mounted on as the bottom has saw marks, suggesting it was quite roughly sawn off of something.
    Any ideas welcome.

Might sound daft, but my money would be on some sort of walking cane?

Lovely thing no matter what it was mounted on - are you planning on mounting it on something now?

People used to have all sorts of things on those pedestal cigarette ash trays. Looks big enough for that?

Possible I suppose, no I dont have any plans for it, I thought it was off the front bonnet of an old car or similar.
Just came across it again today in a cupboard.

I'm wondering how old it might be.

Alvis used an eagle back in the thirties, but it wasn't like that one. Not sure.....

Is it solid brass Pete? I have a dog that's of similar work but is just an ornament given to me and t'other half, new in the 70's. I use it as a door stop but it's so heavy we have to be careful not to stub our toes on it. :)

Not the same as that FC.
Yes solid brass, its definitely older than 70s because I remember seeing it on my grandmothers mantle piece in the early 60s, and I think she had it long before that.

I've seen something similar, but much larger, in all places the Rochester cathedral, they had a very big one on top of one of those bookstand type things they use to read the sermon off of.

My suggestion would be similar to @Sheal but not from a lamp, a flag pole instead.

Maybe like on the top of a hand held one, do you think?
                              Possibly a band, thinking military?

Could well be @pete or possily even from the banners that churches used to have when they had their walking days.
