Which is the correct way to navigate this signalised roundabout?

  1. First option (red lines)

    10.0%
  2. Second option (yellow lines)

    80.0%
  3. Neither of the two

Now, I am quite deliberately not going to give any information that might influence the answers given, but I am genuinely interested in peoples perception of the correct way to negotiate this signalised roundabout (basically, I am wondering if I am in the wrong, or if others are in the wrong, but I am not going to tell you which is which, at least not initially).

If it is deemed to be required in the name of fairness, I am happy to PM any of the admin team which one I believe is right (but can we please make sure that they have seen the thread before I do so, as I don't want them thinking I have lost the plot altogether by sending them a random PM :heehee:)

The first image is the approach to the junction, as you would see it from your car:

In order that the full picture is given to you all before you make your decisions, this is a link to the Google Street View page, so feel free to have a root around.

Now, of the two pictures below, where I have drawn on the coloured lines, which one would you say is correct - the first one (red lines) or the second one (yellow lines)?

Feel free to ask any questions that you feel are prudent, bearing in mind I won't (yet) give away my preference.

We have something very similar locally, you wouldn't believe some of the near misses I've seen.

I'd go by bus or go the long way round,

I'm going with yellow as I have around about near me like this and if the traffic is particularly slow I will follow this route as a first left of the roundabout and use lane two both on entrance and exit (I'm guessing this is the maneuver in question)

I've cast my vote. One thing I would say is that the right-hand lane is poorly marked. Imo, it should have a right turn filter/arrow to indicate that straight ahead or right turn options are both available in this lane.

My actual head says Red as it is what I do, but I vote for Yellow, as it is always the case, when I am driving but I take extreme care when going straight ahead or turning right, as someone always cuts in on me going straight ahead, or undertakes me turning right

The usual roundabout etiquette round here is as follows:

100 yards from the roundabout, move to a completely random lane.
50 yards from the roundabout, prepare to put on your blinkers (not indicators, blinkers like a cart horse wears)
On entry onto the roundabout, switch on your indicators if you intend to go straight ahead, or indicate left if you are turning right, or right if you are turning left, at your leisure.
Take the racing line rather than staying in line. This is possible because you are wearing your blinkers. If this involves cutting someone off, that's fine, how often do they test their brakes anyway?
From the innermost lane, wait til you see a random exist that may or may not be the one you want, and then look out the right side window while steering hard to the left to take the exit.

The trouble with this kind of cock up is that if you know the junction you are going to take it very differently to someone who doesn't.
As Freddy said on the run up there appears to be no right turn option.

The hatched areas half way round are obviously designed to catch out the newcomers.
Must have been designed by a committee.

And who was it that decided that signals are a good idea on roundabouts, if you need signals, then dig up the roundabout and build a block of flats on the freed up land.
Just turn it into a normal junction.

I really like the name "Hospital Bridge Roundabout".:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I think the yellow one is close, but not 100% correct - I think both outside lanes could turn right rather than just the one you've shown.
