We've been weeding in amongst the potato beds today in the community garden and have come across this, I've had a look online and I think it may be himalayan balsam? Can anyone tell me for sure?

Certainly looks like Himalayan balsam. If it is then get rid of it as it is very invasive. You could wait until the flower shows in order to check but don't let it get anywhere near producing seeds as they can shoot in the air across many feet.

          See above.
          Weeds out really easily.
Seed pods are explosive so best done asap.

Sadly this attractive alien has spead along many of the river banks in UK.
It is so dense it eliminates all other wild flowers.
Cos of the explose seed capsules it spreads really easily.
mazambo at least you have stopped it from spreading in the community garden.
If only the rest could be eradicated as easily. IMPATIENS GLANDULIFERA HIMALAYAN BALSAM 21-Aug-12 4-10-24 PM.JPG

Have spent days pulling the stuff; it loves water/marshy riverbanks etc. Can grow (at least!) 10feet tall, floats as do the seeds. We were advised to work upstream-because it will run away from one !

Agree, Self Heal. I've got masses of it this year too, and it's growing really tall in the flowerbeds. I only pull it out when I want the space to plant something else.
