I love steamed beetroot. To me it is better than chocolate. I could eat it all day.

I'm aware that it's high in certain micronutrients, some of which can cause problems when consumed in excess, but figured that unless such elements are present in a refined form, it seems unlikely that any excess could be achieved just by eating the veg.

So apart from the very well known, completely harmless false alarms at the other end of the digestion process, do we reckon it's possible to eat too much and get dangerous side effects?

I am not certain but too much sugar may be an issue.

I'm not sure if you can have too much beetroot. I love the stuff as well. How about if your pee comes out pink/red then you might want to cut back a bit.

I agree with Nigel in that I love the stuff also ... as long as it is not in vinegar.
Our Aldi here sells jars of baby beets au natural plus 1/2 litre cartons of juice, both of which I always have. It is too cheap to grow it oneself.

It is normal for one's pee and poo to be red with regular consumption. It is a magical vegetable ...

I have come to the conclusion that for some, there is such a thing as too much.

I ate a full pack last night. Today I feel like death. My byproducts, which are presenting in abundance, are still purple now. I keep going dizzy, my body hurts, my arms and legs keep going weird, and I feel like puking.

I felt like this at the back end of last week, and put it down to a bug. But I see direct correlation between my beetroot consumption and my symptoms.

So I Googled about. It seems that the powerful antioxidant that gives it it's purple colour can not be digested by some people. I now suspect I am one of those people.

I used to grow it as my Wife loved it, but I've always hated the taste and smell of it

See, I quite like a bit of Beetroot  Sorry for going slightly off-topic, but I understand roasted Beetroot is rather good. Could someone please tell me how to go about this? Peel first or after? How long for and at what temperature? With oil?

                  @Freddy
You can roast beetroot and make chips out of it in which case you wash and peel before cooking. Parboiling will reduce the cooking time. I normally pressure cook it in which case remove the leaves and the roots, scrub to remove soil and then follow pressure cooker instructions. In my case 15 minutes at full pressure, 1.5 pts of water and allow to cool before opening. Then the skins slip off nice and easy.

Our Aldi also sells bags of vegetable crisps containing sweet potato, cassava, beetroot and carrot ... very nice and a pleasant change from potato crisps.

I can't abide the stuff..:yikes: When I had to have school dinners in the Junior school we had beetroot once.I managed to eat all the rest of the stuff on the plate but just couldn't enjoy the taste of beetroot.

The teacher in charge of us said that I couldn't leave the table until every bit of that beetroot had been eaten so I though that if I could swallow each piece without chewing it I could finish it all and would be released from the table.Trying to swallow beetroot without chewing on it was a big mistake as after every bit that went down I was gagging and nearly throwing up and I really don't know how I finished those slices:hate-shocked: That incident put me off beetroot for life and even today I can still recall that one day as if it was yesterday.I can't even eat Semolina for the same reason.:ouch1:

Having said that I can sow grow and weed plus cook beetroot for Mr Kandy slice it up and put in jars with vinegar for Mr Kandy but apart from that I hate the stuff so good luck to anyone that loves it..

PS,I would rather have the chocolate all day any day...

Skool did the same to me, only with sponge pudding, used to throw it up in the playground after. Still can't eat it...

Love a good roast Beetroot though :)

For me it was jelly. I could see there was a fly actually inside it. It had obviously fallen in before the jelly had set. I even showed the dinner lady. She said it wasn't a fly. It clearly was.I was made to eat every last bit.

I can't say it put me off jelly though. Just jelly with dead flies in it.

I like beetroot fresh cooked cant understand pouring vinegar over it, you might as well buy it in jars if you are going to do that.
I must admit it does give you a good clear out the next day if fresh, but nothing wrong with that.:)
