I went to my local garden center recently for some end of season bargains, I found this hanging basket for £1 and didn't know what was in it, I asked the staff who also didn't know what the plant was, so just for fun and £1 I bought it, do you know what it is please. is it a rare and almost extinct find.

      Agree, Google Silver Birch Seedling
If you plant it in your garden now, you may regret it in about 20 years
In my small garden I remove about 20 S/B seedlings a year, spawned from my neighbour's tree

Sadly you bought a pup...luckily it only cost £1.00!
The plant in the pot was long gone...dead.
In it a seed had grown.
The seed of a Silver birch tree.
They are nice trees but grow quickly.
If you only have a small garden I would suggest you get rid of it asap.

Weedaway has a fairly large garden, if I remember correctly.

We have a Silver birch about 50ft+ high and the seeds are a real pain. Each catkin can produce hundreds of seeds and a mature tree can easily produce a million seeds per year. Not all that many germinate (don't need much of a percentage to do so to produce a lot of seedlings) but the seeds themselves are a big nuisance. They're fine enough to get everywhere and we get loads in our loft each year.

Bit like goat willow around here, they come up in all your pots and any disturbed soil.

Absolutely Pete, an acre, no problems there, I thought it looked quite pretty but it was the pot I was buying, the Birch is a very nice unsuspected surprise to me, so I am very pleased with my purchase.
