Have you been watching Chelsea Flower show?
What about the best in show garden…….Well a tad controversial I think ,certainly on trend though.
    Contentious.

Its a beautiful landscape and very well done but its not a garden. Maybe have a different group for them but Chelsea is about show gardens not landscapes.

I haven't watched the show, but that photo and the concept certainly make me want to, @roders! :) Just on a visual level, I really like it and it gives me a feeling of relaxation. I'm not keen on the overemphasis on native plants that seems to be a feature of pollinator/wildlife-friendly gardening lately, I think a mix of native and non-native plants can make things more exciting, visually appealing and still get the job done! My latest favourite genus is eryngiums, not native of course but you should see the variety of insect species they draw into my garden!

Overall, I think it's lovely that so many people are embracing wildlife-friendly gardening, it's kinda magical if you ask me! Who isn't delighted when they plant something for pollinators and they show up? :)

It certainly makes a change from the over manicured stuff they usually show.
I dont actually watch it anymore because they spend far too much money creating gardens that are totally impractical and basically film sets.

Better than 90% of the garden spaces in Britain, without washing drier or trampoline!

I'm trying to think of something kind to say, it looks like a building site with a wobbly scaffold plank.

Over here, it's very much a case of greedy people buying far more land than they can do anything with, (because they can) and then letting it go back to 'meadow' because it's the 'in' thing. I honestly don't believe that a weedy field attracts more wildlife or insects than a well-tended, diversely-planted, attractive garden.

The thing is most people only want the "cuddly" wildlife in their gardens.
Weedy fields are good for the less desirables.

I'm not buying it either Hazel, a lot of books on wildlife gardening nowadays are very specific as to what can be attracted to your garden species-wise based on what you plant, I can observe what visits and use that knowledge to fill in the gaps, not sure how that can arise naturally, I would think something similarly successful would take decades to build up! :dunno: It's a charming notion but not the truth, I suspect. :)

I do think the lack of pesticides and fungicides is a huge factor tho, after not using them for 4 years I'm definitely a convert to chemical-free gardening based on the results in my garden, so I'm glad that's happening with the re-wilding thing! :blue thumb:

Agree with that, but only initially. I find that it typically takes a couple of years to completely convert gardeners to adoring most wildlife that visits their garden! And if you think about that compared to them spending the rest of their gardening years being far more tolerant it's only a very brief period of time! :)
