Clematis gurus !! I need a pair of Clematis to grow over a small archway trellis 2.5 metres tall ( 8 feet ). At this time of year it seems GC's don't have a great selection so I need a good mail order supplier. How are Taylors Clematis ?
Any suggestions for a reliable compact container clematis growing to 6 or 8 feet ?
Should I plant them now ( November ) In a fairly exposed spot , or keep them in a nice sheltered position in their pots until early spring ?

    TIA

Taylors are excellent .....I bought several varieties last year from them and phoned them for some advice on one or two of their newer varieties. Very helpful, competitive and prompt delivery so full marks from me HarryS:)
I would plant out asap :)

Hi @HarryS have you a " Range " near you ? Ours has an excellent selection probably a lot cheaper than you'd pay via mail order.

Taylor`s Clematis are excellent. I have bought a lot of plants from them - you will not find healthier plants anywhere.
They will also give you all the help and advice on varieties ...you can`t go wrong.

@KFF , we do have a large Range near us. But at this time of year , from my visits to a few GC's , I think they run their stock down for winter. I am looking for compact Clematis 6- 8 feet so mail order is the best option.
@Verdun , @Tetters , thanks for the thumbs up on Taylors clematis . The search facility is fantastic , I could select container clematis 6-8 feet tall . This returned over 100 to chose from :blue thumb:
Prices are very good and delivery fair , also it states all clematis are two years old. I'll order today :dbgrtmb:
I'll plant them when we go to the caravan in mid November. Does this early planting give any advantage ? Obviously the leaves will be falling , but would there be any root growth over winter , or will the plant be completely dormant ?

Just to say, should you fancy a white clematis I believe Miss Bateman would tick all your boxes re height, suitability for container growing, etc. nicely. Mine grows in the ground, in rather poor soil, but put on a spectacular flower display this year. I always think it's better to plant in the autumn, for encouraging the roots to establish as you say. Only not a good idea if the container might dry out or get frozen.

Harry, these are just two of Taylors Clematis, and they have just been removed from the packaging. In the box with the plants will be your catalogue and growing guide. Everything you need to know will be included in there, and the couple who run the nursery are happy to help with any query you may have - they are so approachable.
I warn you though, you will get hooked !!!!
I planted these - along with a few more at the beginning of last month, they can be planted at any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen. I`ll take a photo later and show you how well they are doing.

Thanks Clare just added it to my order , it looks fantastic , white will be perfect on the trellis :blue thumb:
@Tetters , they look like really good quality mature plants . Not like the dead twig in a plastic coffee cup you sometimes get by mail order

Winter beauty, Snowbird and koreana Amber planted together last month :)
If you are preparing the planting sight, Taylors advise DO NOT USE MANURE.

Tetters has saved me posting my own pictures Harry but all my purchases have grown superbly well :)
Agree with Clair about Miss Bateman...it is one I bought last winter and it is a beauty. Mine flowered early with some blooms in late summer. A lovely white, almost delicious looking (dont eat:nonofinger:) flower :)
Yes, plant asap. Soil is still warm and the roots will actively settle in and help a headstart next spring :rasp:

No, but they recommend ''break up the soil at the base of the hole (at least 18 inches deep) and dig in a handful of bonemeal....and for container grown clematis, three or four slow release fertiliser tablets each year, pushed into the compost - or slow release granules.

Oh go on Verdun, show us your pictures....which ones did you buy? I`m hoping to add some of the texensis varieties. I already have several ''Princess Diana'' and can`t decide between ''Gravetye Beauty'' (of which I propagated thousands at the nursery) and ''Ladybird Johnson'' which I`m not familiar with.

From memory, Miss Bateman, Sieboldii, HF Young, cholmondeley, Wedding Day, Lansdowne Gem, Armandii ( on a large wall).
Tetters, yours will put mine to shame.....maybe :rasp:

Clematis are growing on me.....already had a couple but added last winter and prob another one or two this winter. Added tracholespermum and a few honeysuckles too :)

Hmm! When I spoke to Thorncrofts......good too, on a par with Taylors I think....they agreed when I asked about manure etc.....viz., well rotted and well broken up and mixed deep down through to the top. Its what I did. Deep hole, dried manure, chicken pellets, compost and fish blood n bone. Then a thick mulch of compost mixed with dried manure. Always assumed clematis are gross feeders and respond to plenty of organic matter :noidea:

:uh-oh: oh please Verdun.... I am but a mere student. I shall have to enquire about the advice from Taylors. Could it be possible that the compost they are sent in is already well enriched? The ''no manure'' advice is in their catalogue in capital letters.
