Hi all! I've been able to get my raised bed done and one of the plants is the cat shoo, I received 6 plugs to plant out. When they arrived they had a material type wrap around the root ball of which some of the roots had pushed through. I removed this wrap and planted out the plugs with plenty of compost and gave them a good water.
In the hot weather I have been watering the flower bed every couple of days to help everything get established. However my cat shoo have wilted, gone floppy like a lettuce and brown (see the pics). Any idea what I did wrong? Should I have left the wrap on the ball?

It looks to me like the leaves got too wet, but then how can I water them without getting the leaves wet?

Let me know if I've missed any vital info!

    Thanks in advance :) IMG_20200414_130741.jpg IMG_20200414_130736.jpg

Have you had a frost since you planted them?

Just noticed, plugs, plugs are usually pretty small and designed to be potted up and grown on for a while before planting out.

What do you mean by 'hardened off'?

        Acclimatized to outdoor conditions.
They would have been grown under glass in near perfect growing conditions, so when they get put outside in the sun, wind and cold nights it all comes as a bit of a shock.
As far as I know, the plant in question is only half hardy, ie. only survives outdoors where it doesn't get too cold.

As I said, plugs are usually potted up into small pots and grown on for a few weeks and slowly acclimatized to being outside, that is putting out during the day when it is warm and moving undercover at night for a week or 10 days.

Just had a read, I believe this isn't an issue as the place I bought them advise to plant them asap, I don't think there's a big change in environment :dunno:

@Cardia , @pete is correct in what he says, all the plug plants I have bought come with the same advice generally, grow on and harden off, that's what I've been doing with mine, they're out all day and at night if the temperature isn't forecast to cold, and they are doing fine. 20200418_132432.jpg

Ok so I should pot the next one's, bring them in if the night will be cold until they are bigger/acclimatised and then plant them out after a few weeks?

I don't have a greenhouse, will indoors be ok?

              Thanks again for the help!

@Cardia plug plants are grown from seed in greenhouses under optimal conditions, so when they are sent to the customer the idea is basically to pot up, leave indoors or in a greenhouse to begin to grow a good strong root system, when new leaves appear and it looks good and healthy then you start to put it outside, the whole idea is to build a good strong plant with a good strong root system to give it the best chance to grow, basically what @pete said originally. I've posted a link with a better explanation.

                That's really useful thank you!

I'm unsure whether to dig up my other plants now and pot them, or to just leave them out now... Temperatures are due to be 5degrees quickly going to 7 at night now. Most look well (lavender and dog wood)but the weigela look a little iffy. The rest were bare root so they were hydrated and then planted out.

As I said, I don't have a greenhouse. What would you do?

Sorry for all the questions, and I appreciate the advice! I'm doubting myself now as I don't want to repeat making any mistakes and really don't want to lose any more plants
