I must first of all apologise for my tree ignorance, sorry.

I have a large copper beech in the corner of my garden and I was wondering, will it lose all of its leaves for the winter?

The reason for asking is because I want to have about six feet lopped of the top and it would be easier to do if it was leafless.

Yes it will lose all its leaves in winter pip.

But it is a BIG tree, unless kept clipped.

Thanks Pete, this one is about 15ft plus, I have seen some very large specimens in the area and I will keep mine well clipped rather than let it get to that sort of size.

Hi Pip I hope it's well away from your house as pete says it's a huge tree and even clipping it will not stop its roots spreading.

Hi Pip, walnut is right but if you prune it very regularly it will help restrict the root growth as it will be putting more energy into growing more branches. Of course, if you prune it regularly it will tend to get bushier so it will keep you busy. [IMG]
