Are cyclamen hardy perenias as i am after some winter colour that is not to big, but need perenials as my borders have weed fabric on covered with gravel. Also can i plant them underneath a Camellia?

    :) Hello rustyroots.

There are hardy and non-hardy Cyclamen. As I remember (from my Bucks days pre-Millenium) the hardy ones are lovely little plants that withstand all sorts of weather and would certainly grow under your Camelia.

There are then the 'house plants', the giant Cyclamen which I am lucky to be able to grow here outdoors all year round in the shade .. mine are in their 4th/5th year now and are up and ready to bloom for me this winter ... :yess:

I am sure someone will come along and advise you about them in the UK.

Victoria's spot on. Absolutely fine under the Camellia and not all Cyclamen are hardy but try Cyclamen hederifolium and look for Cyclamen cilicium. Tough as old boots :dbgrtmb:

Cyclamen coum is the popular one that will naturalise readily in the right conditions and can self seed prolifically :thumb:

It should grow well under your Camellia

There are hardy winter flowering cyclamen and they will be happy under the camellia but if you have the fabric down the seeds won't be able to root.

Heucheras are good plants but make sure they are watered properly until they have settled in. They're opposite to men as they are prone to 'the droop' if they don't imbibe enough :heehee:.

They like well drained soil so that is why you need to water them regularly to get them to settle. Most are happy in sun or partial shade and a few like a lot of shade.

My OH likes Cyclamen and keeps buying them.
I think the ones she buys are a waste of time.
They last a few days and flop and rot.

Presumably they have been forced for Supermarkets and are useless.

I do see them locally so there must be better ones. I just don't bother with them any more.

Cyclamen grow like mad in my garden. I've a cyclamen bed that is about 6ft x 12ft and they spread their seeds everywhere. Each year friends come round in the spring and dig young plants out of the lawn around the bed and plant them in their gardens. They've spread all through other beds as well.

Here's part of the main cyclamen bed. It's in quite heavy shade.

I've had a few more years than you to let it get like that. Some of those cyclamen are older than you :loll: :loll:
