At the time of writing this bulletin the UK Government has announced it will not implement a unilateral ban on illegal cage eggs from countries within the EU.

Poland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Latvia, and Greece can all continue to export processed food products containing battery eggs.

Hens in these countries will sadly still endure life inside a small dark cage and it’s an outrage and insult to our British farmers. The politicians let us down time and again, and as always it’s down to us as consumers to vote with our purses.

So more than ever please watch what you buy; if you buy something made in one of the above countries and it contains egg, you will probably be supporting illegal battery farming.

They are not assuming that all British eggs taste nice and are produced in healthy environment because that is definitely not the case...

I've read about this and it seems to be yet another reason to quit the EU.

We abide by the rules and most of the others just pretend to.
The whole set up is a farce and should be dismantled.

It sounds like the usual ridiculous stuff from our politicians.

As much as most people like to think they have a good set of principles, the fact is we all have to eat, and life is getting expensive these days.

For most ordinary folk, even with the best intentions, faced with a choice of paying £3 for half a dozen British free range eggs, or paying £1.50 for a dozen imported battery farmed eggs, the British farmer with his free range chickens is not going to come off best.

EU regulation increased the cage size, our farmers who use the cage system invested £1000,000's in buying the new system and sold the older cages overseas to try and recoup some costs. But all EU country's have not implemented the new rules.
I dont agree with battery farming of any animal but do understand the population need cheap food, why when then if you drive around the country side then do we see so much wasted land, just set aside no animals and no crops.I forgot the government pay farmers not to produce, well did I think the subsidy's are stopping soon.
I was bought up on a small mixed farm less than 500 acres and have worked for large poultry farms as well.
I think if the powers that be wern't backed/controlled by big business, and taxed processed and take away food at an exorbitant rate and encouraged people to buy food and cook their own meals they would increase the health and well being of the population.
Whilst out being dragged around the local supermarket (its not super)I was amazed at what you can buy ready done for christmas including sandwiches I kid you not a great big tray of frozen sarnies all neatly cut in quarters!Sorry I forgot cant keep people away from their PS3's for to long to actually have a proper christmas feast that is prepared with love!
Any way only 1 more sleep and Santa is coming so Happy Christmas one and all, have a good one and looking forward to 2012 lets hope we have proper growing seasons next year.
              You are what you eat!!!!!!!!
If god didn't want us to eat meat he wouldn't have made it out of food!!!
Have a laugh stay happy and see ya next year.
              Lazydog signing out for 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
              Peace and love
