Dialect/Sayings/Meanings.

What Words do you use in your Dialects,what words do they represent in English,here are a few from some areas of Scotland.
A Didnae dae That Faither. Meaning. A denial of guilt to your Father.
You're aw bum and Parsley. :::::::::: You're All Mouth And Trousers.
Heid Doon Erse Up. :::::::::: Get On With It.
Haud Yur Wheesht. :::::::::: Shush Be Quiet.
Awa And Bile Yur Heed. :::::::::: Get Lost.
Yur Mingin. :::::::::: Your Dirty,Disgusting.
Yur OOT Yur Face. ::::::::::: You Are Very Drunk.
Naw A Umnae ::::::::::: No I Am Not. .

I LUV regional dialect - it gives you a true sense of being home and belonging. Long may we keep these wonderful phrases and our own personal regional identities.
Here in Wales we use the phrase Hirath

"Hiraeth is a Welsh word for which there is no direct English translation"

An old Suffolk phrase often heard at this time of year, particularly first thing in the morning: "Thaas a tidy owd dag", meaning a heavy dew on the grass.

 

My wife comes from Norfolk. I don't understand half of the things she says. I think sometimes she makes it up as she goes along.

"Durr" - kind of like "duhh" but can be used in an annoyed way.
"Mun" - most often used at the end of a sentence, sometimes like "man" but also used to express annoyance. "What you doing munnnn!?"

Both together "durr mun!" - Very annoyed.

Not sure if this is strictly a Valley's thing.. "be there in a minute, now" "I'll do it in a minute, now" can also add "mun/durr/durr mun" to the beginning or end.

Potching - "what you potching with" "stop potching" - fussing/playing. Potch also means Swede and potato mashed together.

Cwtch - the obvious one.. "give us a cwtch!" Hug/cuddle or "get an' cwtch" to a dog means go and lie down in your basket.

Uch a fi/manking - disgusting

"Not gonna lie" - home truth about to go down

"To be honest like.." when you don't agree with something.

"Tidy!" - it's good/liked

"That's lush, that is" - stunning. "That is" added to the end of nearly every sentence ..another eg "that's sad, that is" - someone took the mick and they disproved.

"Like" is added on/in to sentences.. not the way Americans use it though. "That's fab that is, in it like"

Chopsy - "chopsy cow". Gossip queen or someone who cant shut their mouth.

Tamping - "tamping I am" extremely p***ed off.

 

That's lush is teen speak around here. I ferry teens around all the time. I can't understand half of what they say either. Perhaps its me.
