                  Bit surprised to see the word "dag" used for dew in Suffolk. Almost the same word (dagg) is the word for dew here. Suffolk must be a former colony of the Vikings! :snorky:

                  Seriously, a lot of words from the viking period, or variations of them are still used in dialects today. Lets see, which can I think of...Pogue, quinie, dale, beck, kirk...

                    Doesn't surprise me Sandy, a lot of our dialect words are Anglo-Saxon or Viking in origin. Over the centuries, this part of the country was regularly invaded by folk from the other side of the North Sea and many of their words and expressions found their way into our native tongue.

                    I've got an excellent book somewhere which I regard as the definitive work on Suffolk dialect, it tells me the origin of most Suffolk dialect words.

                    Can't find it at the moment though, we moved house last month and the books haven't been unpacked yet. :doh:

                    Another old Suffolk word which I love is 'garp' meaning to stare open-mouthed at something or somebody.
                    A person prone to staring in such a fashion was often said to be 'hoolly fond o' garp seed'. :biggrin:

                      There's a village local to me where despite being at the top of a hill the locals all have webbed fingers and toes! A local phrase there is;

                      wur bint ee/urr to then you

                      which translated means;

                      where is he/she

                          In my end of Scotland the word "Dag" is used by the So Called Gentry.

                          "Robert, I Am Taking The "dag " For Walkies" ;).
