It’s St David’s Day, the day of the daffodils (and the leeks) for those from the land of Wales (Picture: Getty) St David’s Day, the annual celebration of Wales and all things Welsh is finally here. Haleliwia!* On March 1st 2018, Welshophiles around the world will be picking daffodils, eating raw leeks and taming dragons to celebrate the best country in the UK. The festival is named after the Patron Saint of Wales, St David, who defeated the Saxons in battle. The kindly soul is thought to have died on March 1st, either in 601AD or 589AD. A white dove is the saint’s emblem and he has his own flag, which is black with a yellow cross – very different to the Welsh flag, featuring a red dragon. This is the flag of St David (Picture: Getty) [IMG]Celebrations in Wales will be kicking off bright and early, as long as there isn’t too much snow holding back the festivities.
Maybe you’d like to get involved by wishing your pals a Happy St David’s Day in Welsh. Or you could just eat some appropriate food – Welsh rarebit, leek soup, tintern cheese, Welsh cakes or crempog (Welsh pancakes with salt and vinegar). If you really want to get into the spirit of the day, you can adorn yourself with a decorative leek or daffodil, both of which are symbols of Wales. Why? During a battle against the Saxons, St David apparently advised soldiers to wear leeks in their hats to avoid friendly fire. Today is the day to celebrate all things Welsh (Picture: Andrew Redington/Getty Images) This is why one of the emblems of Wales is the leek and especially associated with today. The Welsh words for leek and daffodil are virtually the same – Cenhinen and Cenhinen Pedr – which partly explains why both have been adopted as emblems. But some people believe the English prefer the daffodil symbol as the leek is linked to the Saxon defeat.
