On the advice of the label on my maris peers I started earthing them up when they got to about 10 inches. However, they're in a bag and one plant is 10 inches and the others were quite small. I earthed them up so the leaves of the biggest plant were still uncovered but the smallest plant was definitely buried, and it;s still managed to peek through eventually so I'm sure the littler ones will be fine.

Its much better to earth up before they get too tall or you run the risk of damaging the stems.

Assuming they are being grown for an autumn cropping, you need to get it done now. I planted Estima at a clients garden, outdoors, for an autumn crop and I earthed up straight away.
