Bought myself some Chilli seeds (few different kinds) just wondering how easy it is for them to grow here, before I begin... cheers :D

Reasonably easy Kyle, do better with some protection although in a good summer they will crop outside.

I planted some of the "naughty" ones that Penny in Ontario sent me, on the windowsill a few days ago.

You can overwinter them in doors too for an early crop the following year.

Mind you, i've still got a couple fruiting in the unheated greenhouse this year.

A lot of us on here grow chillies :dbgrtmb:.

I have about a dozen plants in the greenhouse still producing. It's best to get an early start with germinating them and next month is a good time. The best way that I have found to do this is with a seed sprouter. Here's a link to a thread

      http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/propagation-month/33706-germinating-seeds-quickly.html

You can do a quick search on GC for threads about chillies and you find quite a lot.

The plants are perenials but don't like cold weather. I have some that are five years old but after three years they don't seem to do so well. Overwintering them indoors can be a bit of a problem as they are prone to whitefly.

I've started some inside on my bedroom windowsil (few days ago) but I didn't soak them earlier, so looking at a few weeks without any sprouts? Should I water them often, not often?

Guide to Growing Chilli Plants from Seed: The Chilli King | Chilli Plants | Chilli Seeds | Growing Tips | The Chilli King

Usually a bedroom windowsill isn't a good place to try and start them. They don't need the light until germinated and the sill is unlikely to be warm enough. You really want a minimum of 70F and even if your room was that temperature there would be downdrafts on the glass of the window that would be much cooler.

An airing cupboard or radiator is probably best and if you keep the seeds sealed in a container then you just need to see that they are damp.

Best to put the pot in a plastic bag, otherwise the heating will dry it out, shouldn't need any watering then, but keep your eye on them, open up as soon as you get germination to avoid molds creeping in.

I have a radiator under my windowsill, inches from it (it's on now!)

So I'll put some bags over them and leave it for a few weeks :)

            cheers!

Kyle , it is great fun growing Chillis . I started my seed last year end of January pic below is a Cherry Bomb Chilli at the end of May. You can just see the first flowers on it . You can also see one I killed next to it by overwatering possibly:wallbang:
I got lots of seedlings from the Cherry Bombs and gave most of them away. The Jalapeno was difficult only got 3 seedlings. These grow to about 1 metre high and seemed fine in a 25cm pot . They need as much light and heat as you can supply , I put mine outside at the end of June and they did OK .

mabe not the easiest thing but totally do-able. Just have to find the perfect ratio of heat/water! Any gardening book can teach you that! Good luck!

Just got back and checked, not a sausage yet:( Put them in a warmer place. Room was freezing, evil wife draws the blinds & turns the heating off in my room when i'm not here.

Suprisingly though, the Basil has germinated:what:
