    Hi,

I'm new here but I need your help please.

Bare with me, I am trying to find out what month a particular photo was taken, I saw the very last steam engine and in the distance is this Elder tree.

I believe it is sometime August - September...

The photo was taken in 1967 so sorry about the grainy image, but based on what you know what month would you say it is?

    Thanks,
    Andy. Elder Tree.JPG

    Welcome to the forum Andy.

    A bit of detective work!

I would say spring time as it looks like new leaves are forming, then again could be autumn - that's not much help I know. Difficult to say honestly. Do you have other photos taken around the same time? Do you know the steam engine name/number, if it was the last train to run on a Beeching axed track there should be other clues that railway enthusiasts could solve.

A few years back I scanned a load of family 35mm slides from the 60s, one was of the Flying Scotsman and I remember taking the photo but had no idea which year even, I found other photos people had taken on Facebook at the same time which helped me date it.

Are you sure it's an Elder, it doesn't look right for one.
If August you would probably be able to see clusters of fruit.
Last steam train on mainline BR was August 68.

    Hi John,

    Nice to talk to you.

The engine was 8F 48218, and it was at Gt. Harwood, Lancashire as the demolition train, it was withdrawn from service 30/9/1967.

I do know for a fact it was no earlier than July 1967, and well before Christmas.

I remember the tree well as it was near my Grandfather's house but on private land.

There is one more photo of another tree (attached) which leads me nearer to September? Tree.JPG

    What do you think?

    Thanks,
    Andy.

    Hi Nigel,

I'm sure it was an elder, I got into making wine in my early 20's and was always frustrated that I couldn't pick any of the berries from it.

The railway line in question was a branch line and you have to trust me on this one, I have spent five years researching this.

Always nice to make new friends - thanks!
    Andy.
