I have suddenly become aware of the need for a privacy hedge about 15m long on one of my garden boundaries. Euonymus japonicus grows well here, so have been thinking of taking cuttings from an existing plant. Most sources say semi-ripe or hardwood cuttings later in the year, but the Plants for a Future website says they root at any time of the year with bottom heat. Another use for my new soil cable heated bench?
Wondering if anyone has experience rooting these cuttings please, and potential growth rate. Am I being silly - should I buy established plants?

If you want a 15m length then I'd do cuttings. This is a good time of year to do them.

It depends on how high you want it to grow. Although it grows reasonably fast you're not going to get a privacy hedge all that quickly. If it's just for a boundary then it would be perfect.

We have a lot of euonymous of different varieties and we regularly take cuttings and sell the plants for our charity. When GC members come to our Open Day they are always welcome to take cuttings and some take advantage of it. One of our members has had a few hundred cuttings from us.

If I'm asked in advance then I don't take the hedge cutters to the bushes. We just filled a wheelie bin, yesterday, with the trimmings from a silver version.

If the plants aren't growing in the fashion you want them then you can train them on a framework.

Thanks very much shiney. I have several that have a nice upright habit and have already made a short hedge of the golden variegated one, but with plants I brought from my last house. I think I'll put up with having to wait for privacy... I have one large plant elsewhere that has some reverted back to green, so am planning to use that as it'll make a nice backdrop for other plants,
Perhaps I'll start the cuttings on heat and pot them up to cold frame once they have rooted. Do you find you need hormone rooting powder?
      :ThankYou:

We never bother with rooting powder.

Euonymus seem to root quite easily, i took a number of cuttings late last year of the variegated yellow one "emerald and gold" and was delighted to find they had all taken root :hapydancsmil::hapfeet::hapydancsmil:

btw how do you all pronounce Euonymus? i cant say it without kind of contorting my lips :heehee:
