Hi, like everyone else I'm feeling the pinch and having to make more of an effort to make money last the month. I have bought a fair quota of plants and thought I might be able to bulk my borders and garden out with flowers/plants grown from seed in my greenhouse.
I have some seeds already germinating, gazanias, delphiniums and helychrysums (straw flower).
Are there any other seeds suitable for a beginner that could provide me with a good chance of germination and some flowers/plants for this year ?

Hi Joolz and thanks for the offer.
I'm off to the garden centre this morning so I am going to see what thay have got.
I planted helychrysum seeds last autumn for this spring but they went too leggy and gangly. Hopefully these seeds I've just planted will do better.
I'll feed back on what seeds I get.

Well my trip wasn't very fruitful ! I got 2 packets of seeds. Rock roses and Icelandic poppies. I am working on a couple of small rock gardens so the roses might prove useful. And the poppies I can scatter around the borders.
I did see rudbeckia but there were lots of different types so I wasn't too sure which to choose.

Last year was my first proper year growing seeds, I found Marigold and Cosmos to be the best, which blossomed for most of the summer.

Agree with joolz and kyle cosmos is a great border filler and soo easy from seed germinating in days, they grow like triffids, I grow them every year to fill any gaps in borders, and collect seed for the next year too, lots of easy perennials you could grow lupins, salvias, hollyhock etc but doubt you'll get any flowers from them this year now, they really need sowing earlier for first year flowers.

Hi and thanks, I grew marigolds from seed last year and they were pretty good.
Your recommendations for cosmos sounds interesting. The only thing making me hesitate is that here where I live there are thousands of them growing along the lanes and roadsides.
Perhaps if I do a search and find cosmos other than the same colour I find here then I might give them a go.

I go for rudbeckia rustic dwarfs, lovely strong plants which flower in all bronze shades until frosts. And last year a gre dahlias from seed, bishops children. Foliage was a lovely bronze colour, and bright flowers of many colours. They looked good among the cosmos purity and the mallow.
