The previous owners put 40 or so foot print stones into the back lawn. They are designed to keep your feet dry when hanging out the washing or going to the summer house at the bottom of the garden.

The problem with these stones are...
    1. They are a nightmare when mowing the grass
    2. They get over grown really quickly
    3. They look awful when over grown
    4. When I cut them back they are tricky to do with a knife
    5. When I cut them back the amount of grass and soil I cut out fills a lot of my garden bin
    6. They are generally more of a pain than a help

So... how would you suggest replacing them with grass?

I guess there are two options...

    1. Remove, fill hole and reseed
    2. Remove, fill hole and turf

What do you suggest? What would be the cheapest, easiest and quickest way to do the job? I don't mind waiting for the grass seeds to go if this is preferred option I just don't want to spend days doing the preparation work!

    Thanks for your help!

cheapest = seed, easiest = both, quickest = turf.
just get a roll or 2 of turf depending on how big these stones are and cut out what you need? I normally just patch up with normal compost and seed though.. up to you. oh water in well too

As Linz said fill holes with new turf and patch in with soil and seed. Make sure the turf is fresh . As you may only need two rolls B and Q may be best . If you ask they will tell you when they are to receive a fresh batch. So you can nip down and get it then.
Tatty old turf struggles - I know from experience !
