Sorry! I was rude and asked a question before having introduced myself. My wife and I have been gardening for 40 years and have been totally organic for over 20 years. There is always something new to learn and we are lucky enough to regularly find new plants appearing in our garden - thank you birds. We have learnt that when something pops up in the garden we leave it to grow so we can make a decision on whether to keep it or not. This year we have found 7 wild, bee orchids near the bottom of our garden! anyone know how we can help them spread?

Nathan, I have only read the first two pages of messages on the Webmaster page. Thanks for setting up the site. I have a question for you that might have already been asked on a page I haven't seen. If you are number 2, who is number 1?

Welcome Shiney and Mrs Shiney [IMG] Thanks for pointing this post out to me Poppy :D

Bee orchids in your lawn? Lucky, lucky you and I am green with envy. You ask how you can spread them - just leave them alone. Seeds will only germinate if the right fungus is present in the soil. If the fungus spreads then so will the bee orchids. But there are two things you must NOT do

1 Do not mow until after seeds have set and fallen.. ie wait until the flowers are dry and brown

2 Do not use any lawn or other fertilisers any where near them - Ditto lawn weedkillers etc

Send us some photos - we love to see them :D

Thanks for info Hornbeam. We don't mow that area until the seeds from our variety of different coloured cowslips have set so we can always extend the timing. We are totally organic so no fertilisers or weedkillers. I see you are Herts Essex border - so are we. Maybe we are neighbours.
    How do I send photo?
I'll try and find you in wildflower as Poppy suggests. Thank you Poppy.

Lovely village! I'll be down your way shortly as I have some photographic work to do on listed buildings for Engliish Heritage. May your bee orchids prosper!

    Thanks purplelady.

I see you've been busy greeting everyone. Sorry it took so long to reply. I've been chasing mice in the loft.

Stortford, Hatfield Heath - ah, happy memories! Lived in Harlow 75-99.

Loved to shop in Stortford - Mansens(?) and lots of other lovely little old shops. Loved to attend the auctions too in the building by Waitroses which has now been turned into a lovely, active church - The Charis Centre. Could tell you a story or two about its dedication if you're interested.

    Welcome to GC!!

    Hi michaelmasdaisy

Maslens were taken over by Coopers a couple of years ago. Although they have kept some of its character they have streamlined it and made it more efficient - I rarely go there now.

I'm always interested in local history, and gossip - not fussy which!

    Thanks
