I am looking very, very fragrant shrubs for throughout the year for a fragrant bed I am planning. What are your recommendations? :)

Good evening Woo. Yes, I could do with some more of those. I love the scent of them and they are very pretty to look at too. Thank you. :)

Hi Lea, I've got a Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata' near my steps to the back garden, it's got a lovely scent this time of year.

If you've got reasonable loamy soil, Lea, the Daphnes are unbeatable for scent. Very pretty evergreen or semi-evergreen small shrubs, they can be tricky to grow though!
Lonicera purpusii isn't remarkable to look at but highly scented flowers in winter. One of the best early-summer-flowering shrubs is Viburnum carlcephalum, that really carries. Roses to take you through summer? For autumn, some of the Hostas like Royal Standard have scented flowers. Give me a few minutes....my UK garden was nearly all scented plants..will have a nostalgic look at the photos......
          JWK beat me to it!:)

Yes Daphnes are a a bit choosy and not cheap . They don't like being moved so will take a long time to settle in, but they do pay you back eventually :)

Perhaps Buddleia or Eleagnus ebbingeii for late summer and autumn?

I've got a Clerodendrum bungei, it has a wonderful scent and flowers later in the summer :)

Also worth looking for Calycanthus floridus :), I've just got one from a sale bed at the local garden centre and am looking forward to seeing it flower :)

I tried to create a scented walk, donkey's years ago. I never felt I had enough in flower at once to really carry a strong scent. Perhaps the site was too exposed (it wasn't THAT exposed, but perhaps it doesn't take much breeze to carry the scent away?)

Is a proper scented garden, which will do its thing for most of the year, viable? How much shelter does it need - would a surrounding hedge 8' tall be enough?
