 I thought we could give Sirius's idea a shot & if it does turn out to be popular then we could maybe have a bookshelf forum at a later date.... :blue thumb:

My old gardening books are really just part of my collection.. Some belonged to old relatives or friends.. Surprising how much information they hold though that is still very relavent to today..!! I hate the thought of books becoming redundent & it is all electronic..!! I love the feel & smell of old books.....

 Happy garden reading everyone..... :yay:

What's this thread about then? It looks interesting, but is there another thread I've missed that explains Sirius's idea?

Hi JWK, this is a trial thread that Marley has started with regard to Sirius idea, which I think should be the main one.:snork:

To be honest, I think a book sticky at the top of every existing section would enable people who are interested in say trees, to get info. about books just on trees at the same time as they are reading threads on trees. That way we don't have to scroll through reviews of books on greenhouses if we don't have a greenhouse! It will also attract more people searching the net for books on certain subjects to this website.

I should think that people will also be interested in reading and writing about how books have inspired members to garden, or got them interested in gardening in the first place. But book reviews grouped in the right way are also practical, since more often than not you can use them to find a book to buy, or a cheap second-hand version from the internet at least, or ask your library to get it.

        I reckon.

The trouble is, Cacadores, is that there is a tendency for too many sticky threads over a time. Having a book sticky for every subject would just increase that tendency with no guarantee that it would be used, or if it was, used enough. I think one Thread on Books would be much neater and more visited.:snork: We might have to merge the two threads to get things on one path.:dunno:

You could later simply un-sticky an unused sticky. But fair enough and thank you. What about if I were to start a topic on books on trees that I have, hoping others might have some good tree books I could look up? Could I still do that in the tree section?

I'd prefer an Index sticky thread in each Forum.

Of course someone has to maintain it with links to "interesting" posts, but that sticky could have a link to the "Books on Trees" thread (in the Trees forum)

Saves cluttering up the posting lists with Sticky items.

Someone needs to make sure that the 1st Post is an up-to-date list. I suppose folk then post suggestions as replies to that thread (although they could use the "Report" button to propose a suggestions to a MOD, which avoid having to have millions of Replies in the thread, and could mean that the thread was Locked perhaps (assuming that a Report on a locked post is possible).

            Just a thought ...

For the sort of thing you suggest, Kristen, the vital thing would continuity i.e. having an Admin member available, and willing, to lend themselves to maintaining the Index. All of Admin are subject to the pressures of Life, working and paying the bills so it would be difficult to keep the dedicated continuity of an Admin to maintain such an index. Plus, there would be suggestions for other subjects to be up dated and maintained in a similar manner escalating the problem, as was suggested with an earlier subject requiring the dedicated maintenance by an Admin.
We only use the "Report" button for problems with a post or thread, where a member is reporting Spam, an offensive post, or the like:nonofinger: :snork: . I don't think using the Report button to just give up date information or similar is something it was designed for or suitable for.:dunno: :snork:
