The people who are suffering today will probably become "religous zealots" after the aid has made their lives easier and they have more time to think about it. Bit narrow minded that Pete some good work being done in africa take Kenya for example through charities like action aid good work has been done saving lives by providing essentials like clean drinking water, education as allowed them to set up farming projects and indeed they are now exporting products, many countries are the same you only hear about the bad ones and lets face it it's not the people it's the politics.

Yeah OK Walnut, probably generalising there.
Its just that all the world hates us, but are always there holding out their hands.
As you probably have guessed by now, I dont have much faith in human nature.

And they are all quite happy to come here and claim benefits that we have all paid for. It`s about time we said enough is enough.

I don't believe that intelligent people on GC actually believe that you can claim all benefits the minute you are in Britain. This is the rubbish put out by the Sun and the Mirror and the Mail. The only benefit you are fully entitled to if you are a legal immigrant is health care. And as you have to produce a 'certificate of health' before being allowed in seems fair enough. You guys seem to think that someone just says 'I want to come in' and BINGO. Get real. Immigrants have to show how they are going to support themselves. They can't just come and say 'GIMME'.

Most immigrants are skilled. In my own field of work I have been associated with all these horrible immigrants who are keeping the health service running .

You guys shouldn't be complaining about the immigrants. You should be complaining about governments of many years past who are not training our own citizens to do these jobs. But that opens arguments about fees for university courses. It is not as simple as you are making out. (Sorry Pete.I know you like to see everything simply. But I am not calling you simple. Honest). :D

John, are you saying that all those busses that arrive each week from, (just as an example) Poland, are checked to make sure that everyone on board can pay their way.
The reason we need these foreign workers is that the wage levels for many jobs have been pushed down to such a level, that British people cant afford to live on the wages.
When you have people such as Police and Teachers saying that they need extra help to buy a house, because they are key workers, but are not paid enough to do so.
How do they think, the road sweeper buys his house.
In the construction industry the wages are being depressed by foreign labour undercutting the British worker, there aren't many British left on the big sites.
This just means higher profits for the big companies, they buying price is rising and the wage bill is falling.

Got a feeling John we are looking at this from diferent levels mate, I'm in the basement. :D

We certainly are looking at this differently Pete. (We usually do). I didn't realise that you are not differentiating between EU and non-EU. The rules are totally different. I think we should force the half million Brits who have retired to the southern EU to come home and claim their pensions here, and the hundred and fifty thousand working Poles who have arrived, including my dentist, to go home and work there. LoL do you want to do my teeth? :D

[IMG] I have just read through this thread. I agree with you all in some way or another. I do however agree with Pete about the Construction Industry, have 1st hand experience of that around this area. Hardly an English workman on any of them!!! Sometimes I think Enoch Powell was right about immigration all those years ago now, in hindsight...!! [IMG] :(

    John,
Many of the hygine and infection problems in the hospitals are a direct casuse of the penny pinching atitude of the goverment in funding the hospitals. My brother works as a nursing assistant during his non college time, going from his direct experince (Gwent and Bristol NHS Trusts):

The nhs trusts can only afford to pay cleaning staff the minimum wage, the only workers who will work for it are imigrants and most of them couldnt frankly give a sh*t about hygine. I cant blame the cleaners either, whos going to do a thorough job for £5.58 an hour especially as the cleaning staff are understaffed in the first place with unrealist expectations.

The result being that basic cleaning gets neglected or done badly, most of the cleaners canot speak proper english.

imigrant workers largly do not contribute to the economy, most pay very little tax (if any) as they regularly travel back to thier home country ensuring they are not elegibal.

IMO the majority of the country's problems could be solved by, withdrawl from the EU, expulsion of unskilled workers by canceling visas, proper border control and strict vetting of those trying to come in with only skilled workers that we have a shortadge of let in and finally withdrawl of all forighn aid and troops.

The savings from not having to comply with eu burocracy alone would be imense and would alow us to incres the minimum wadge and be able to fill vacancys with british citizens.

Put your teeth in a plain brown envelope and send them to me John, I'll see what I can do. :D
EU, non EU, they are all the same to me John, if they work for lower wages than the going rate they are not welcome, if they bring large families with lots of dependants, they are not welcome.
Its OK saying that they are paying taxes when they get a job, but they have not paid anything in, in previous years, they then bring in dependants who can claim allsorts of benefits in their own rights.
One worker, half a dozen hangers on.
If they think we can keep up the influx indefinitly, we are going to have some real problems, some of which are just starting.

And this is just Migrant labour and immigrants, dare we mention "asylum seekers", I can remember when they were just the odd Russian spy or gymnast, now they queue to get over here and claim asylum, from every corner of the globe almost.

How many of these people come into this country with jobs and accomodation already lined up? I doubt if it`s many, therefore who pays for their accomodation and their food? And what do they do for money while waiting for employment? That`s, obviously, those who are actively looking for employment.
