I want to grow Glads for showing and can I put them in large pots? My clay soil is so hard I doubt I will get them in the ground

I too have heavy clay soil. My rule of thumb is that they need to be planted by the beginning of April to get some flowers for mid-August, and I always remember that because it's when my daughter was born.

So you may have missed the boat if your local flower show is Aug BH weekend.
