I am backing Lord Windermere each way as I have just returned from the Lake District it's 50-1 and bookies are paying first six.

I have noticed over the years the race is on later and later in the day so us idiots have more time to invest our hard earned cash lol.

I have more of an interest in Potters Legend in the 3-40 at Aintree as it is trained at one of the gardens I do some work at and I often give it a handful of grass.
                        A real stable favourite.

The GN is very late this year at 5:15 , as Roders said to get more punters watching and betting. For years the boat race (yawn) and the GN were always on the same day.
On betting , my parish vicar was giving us a talk on the evils of drink and gambling. He said " look at the publican and the bookmaker . With big wads of cash ,driving round in flashy cars !!"
So I opened a pub with a bookies attached

SO, THIS trainer desperate to win a classic gives his horse a performance-enhancing substance while parading shortly before the big race.
He is spotted by an eagle-eyed jockey club steward who, not unnaturally, demands 'hey, what have you just given that horse?'
'Just a sugar-coated sweet, for luck – here you can have one if you don't trust me and I'll take one, too,' replies the quick-thinking trainer.

The steward regards the sugar cube suspiciously but as the crowd is getting restless and not wanting to hold up the race, takes and digests said sweet, as does the trainer and continues on his way.
The trainer says to his jockey – 'listen, hit the front as soon as you can and stay there, you'll have nothing to worry about.

'If anything passes you at all, it'll either be me or the steward!':snork:

I look at this from a different perspective, 40 years a bookmaker, it`s a lottery :fingers crossed:, form counts for nothing, 1 faller can bring down half the field :wallbanging:, as bookmakers are paying on 6 :yikes:, settlers are praying for easily divisible by 4, the layers are praying for the first 6 in the betting, the counter staff are praying for closing time.
We used to run a sweepstake on how soon after the race the first ticket would be presented for payment, usually within 5 mins of race ending, there was no computerised settling in my day :old:, every ticket identical in size etc, and the punter would look aggrieved if you could not just pull his/hers out of the pile over a 1000 usually.
As for the 5-15p.m. start, it probably has more to do with television rights, footie results in 5-30 p.m. kick off Chelsea game, so slot it in there.
I feel desperately sorry for the staff. :cry3:
