After some heavy storms this week and grape sized hail stones, I wondered how you can protect the greenhouse. A polytunnel would have fared better but for me a bit un sightly, Obviously they are mainly toughened glass, but this can still break, is there any greenhouse's that use laminated glass in the roof, is it poss to retro-fit it? are there shutters that can be fitted? thanks. fF

I would imagine twin walled polycarbonate would do the trick, I've had a football bounce of mine a few times with no ill effect apart from making me

      Hi,

Expect you can buy laminated glass but think it will be very expensive.

After the neighbours kids football broke our standard 3mm glass, we fitted 10mm twinwalled polycarbonabe sheets into our standard aluminium greenhouse.
Just enough space to still use the glazing clips.
Important to properly seal the ends with the correct tape.

You can get several sizes of thinner twin wall but they can flex more and prone to being blow out according to some.

10mm TW does reduce the light a bit, but for most of the plants we grow in there thats not a problem.
It really does improve the insulation and keeps things much warmer in winter.

Had glass greenhouse roofs for nigh on 50 years, never had a problem with hailstones in the UK with ordinary 3mm horticultural glass.

Ok might be different in France, but how about some shade netting over the top of the greenhouse in summer.
