    Hi guys

I am busy saving up for a proper green house. I already have the patio area at the bottom of the garden and I'll be able to have a 6x6 GH.

Now my garden faces more or less West when I look back towards my house.

I was thinking I should place it facing West (door of the GH facing towards my house). This will allow me to have it smack bang in the middle of the patio area with room for me to walk around, paint the fences etc

    See photo

I was wondering if maybe I should have it facing south but I don't know how much of a benefit I would get from loosing the nicer view of having the greenhouse 'face on'

    Any thoughts?

I think to get the best out of your Green House it should face South with the front facing the House, but you could face it East as you would get the same benefit, as the Sun will pass over it from the East side to the West Side. If you're spending good money on a Green House facing it the wrong direction would be a waste.:dunno:

If it runs east west then the longest side of the greenhouse will face South, which is were the sun shines from and so you will get the most benefit from the sun.

So, is the longest side the 6ft side, or the 6ft side?
Just asking for a confused friend:heehee:

Mine faces north, with the south gable against a fence and east side close to the shed, but I still get plenty of light as the sun passes through the roof on almost all day, and then streams in the west side for the bulk of the afternoon.

Okay I missed the 6*6ft bit. It had been a long day.

All sides being equal, I saw this more as a where should the door be sited issue, into the prevailing winds/elsewhere, and where most convenient for access from paths and minimising need for steps

The recommended orientation for greenhouses is to have the longest side facing south but, as Flounder says, it doesn't matter how you have it if it's square. :noidea: So have it whichever way is more convenient for you.

                  Thanks all

absolutely the door issue. I have a split level patio but with the smaller one being for the table and chairs. Compromise with the other half for getting a GH.

The lead time for the greenhouse is about 15 weeks so I guess I’ve got plenty of time to see where the sun will hit.

                  Thanks

                  Hi,

The more popular 6x8 size is not much dearer and gives you a lot more space, the most common greenhouse complaint is " wish we had gone for the larger size" :)

We followed that principle many years ago and bought the biggest we could afford. It's 20'x10' and it was full within a year  Whatever you get it's never big enough! :dunno:

Gardener's Law states that: The number of plants requiring to be in the greenhouse at anytime of year is always a whole number greater than can be comfortably accomodated"
This also applies to window sill and propagators.
