Growing fruit/veg in hanging basket?

I've got two 12" hanging baskets to hang on either side of the front door.

I'm pretty much set on these for one for the baskets:

I'm struggling to find something else, I've read that gooseberries can be used but unsure of which type that cascade? I'm looking for something that will cascade/tumble but also looks nice.

I've read that you can use some squash sized veg but you need to use mesh for support, does this look ugly?

Not keen on strawberries, just to get that out the way quickly!

 

The tumbling tom will be good for a basket . I think one or two max will fill a 12" basket . I wouldn't grow from seed , your local nurseries and GC's should sell tumbling tom plants late April for about £1.50 each . They do take quite a bit of watering in a basket

Quick question: when filling the hanging basket with compost should i try to compact it so the moisture doesn't drain out as easily? Just a thought.

 

Might be worth trying a ridge type cucumber. They trail on the ground (though can be trained up) and I'd imagine that one would happily dangle from a basket.

 

strawberries by the front door wouldn't be a good idea anyway i don't think...not if your visitors have a sweet tooth like me

 

Try a Cucumber called Cryistal Apple, grows to the size of an apple with yellow skin.
