Following on from Gardeners Question Time today.

You soak the phone book overnight, place spawn every 60 pages or so (Oyster mushroom spawn was suggested, available for a few quid on the internet)

Wrap it in a plastic bag with some holes in it and place it in a warm dark place.

The fruiting bodies will grow out thru the holes.

What a cool idea I normally just throw then straight in the bin as never use them and they take up loads of room

I might suggest they do that with the telephone directory at The Mushroom Club.

Maybe it's some H&S requirement, like having to microwave bog roll tubes before kids can use them for art/craft projects?

Ahh, could be. Wouldn't hurt to do though, it would ensure that you only got Oyster Mushrooms rather than Vashta Nerada.

They could conceivably have e coli bacteria.

Gone are the happy blissful days when you could play with an empty loo roll tube, eat mud & worms, leave your cotton-wool-bubble :(

Do farm animals catch E. Coli from bog roll tubes? 'Science' like that might discredit the likes of badger culls.

Think we've all got e coli in our guts, its when it gets in the wrong end that problems occur.
