In the past I always prepared for it and got the tubs of sweets and chocolates in and even dressed as a witch. The last couple of years we have had nobody round and had to eat the sweets ourselves, not good. The last couple of years before that all the kids had become teenagers and even though we still provided the sweets and treats we still ended up with candle grease up our windows. So now I am not sure what to do because all those teenagers are now parents themselves and moved away and we are just pensioners left here!

Yeah, sometimes I get loads call, other years hardly anyone. I buy all the sweets too....and you know what happens if few turn up!
I don't mind the lil uns, but not so keen on teenagers turning up. Keeps em out of trouble I guess :) as long as they are sensible.

we have seen a decline over the last few years of people trick or treating so i too have been left with lots of sweets. This year i am just going to do a few bags up and when they run out i will just say "sorry all gone". I suppose we are quite lucky here as so far no one has had eggs thrown etc etc

Same here , maybe 4 years ago we would get about 8 groups from tots with mum , to young teens . Last year nobody called . Maybe its my halloween decoration of a headless corpse hung on the front door that is putting them off :biggrin:

Our neighbours kids bake cupcakes and offer them in exchange for treats, which is a nice idea.
We live on a solitary road so don't tend to get strangers knocking, which makes the whole thing more of a friendly excuse for a catch up.

Where I used to live it became a little bit of a problem and the local supermarkets used to have big signs up saying that children would not be served with eggs or bags of flour!! I just lock the door and pretend I am out!!!! I read that some elderly people actually dread halloween night and sit in the dark all evening for fear of somebody knocking so I have to say that I am against it, sorry.

We never use to target the elderly. I guess not all elderly live in bungalows now though. There were certain areas on our estate for the elderly.
Sometimes I go out too. It depends, as I live day to day, and rarely make plans. I am a spontaneous kinda geezer :)

I don't mind when little kids come to the door all dressed up. It's the teenage hoodies who come looking for cash. We don't seem to get them here now we've moved but they were a bit of a pest where we used to live

I usually leave the hall light off, and slowly open the door, but hide behind it as I open it. That usually scares the young ones, and old alike. If it doesn't work, I show my face, and that always makes them run off

Well this is the first Halloween in our current home. So we decided to go and see wicked at the mayflower.

Call me a bitter young man but I don't like Halloween. It's an American thing and we Brits don't really do it any justice. Instead we just get people that ring the door bell continually for like 5 minutes.

Halloween is an ancient Celtic celebration and the origin of the current 'trick or treating' can be traced back to the Middle Ages.

It was when the poor used to knock on doors and beg for food. In return they used to sing, dance or recite poetry.

Modern day trick or treating is a travesty of the original and, in its present form, I think it should not happen.
