    Hi everyone,

I'm a complete beginner in the garden, having lived in flats for about 12 years, recently I found myself in a house with a little garden to call my own.

Probably I'll mostly be here to get some advice when things are going wrong, or to try to avoid things going wrong, or when my dad's (quite good) gardening knowledge can't help.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Jon

      Thanks!

I thought I should post some before/after shots of my garden to start with. I live in a mid-terrace, and we're on a hill so there's a retaining wall at the back where the street steps up to the next street level, so our garden is quite narrow and small. Big enough for a table and chairs, to store my bike, have a washing line and a wee bit of grass and plants though, so I'm fine with that.

Being in the west coast of Scotland, we get lots of rain, so the grass that was here when we moved in was very mossy and boggy. Additional water draining through the wall didn't help either. With the advice/instructions of my dad, we extended the slabbed area width-wise, put down some decking to the washing line, built a flower bed at the back, put down some new grass (with improved drainage underneath), covered the ugly wall with some bamboo matting and made a little path to allow easy access. Quite happy with it so far :)

Thanks for the messages everyone :)

Probably won't be doing anything else in the garden until the spring, but until then I'll be looking around and asking for suggestions and advice!
