I'm digging a plot at the end of the garden - part of it has a seam of coal type stuff running through it - i have taken most of it out (as best as i can) but am wondering if it will have a detrimental effect for growing veggies?

It's generally about 3-6 inches deep and lies about 6 - 12 inches down.

    Any help much appreciated!

Not to worry. If it is coal it won't affect veg and personally I'd be tempted to bag and sell it!

But if it's only 3" - 6" thick, and so near the surface, without knowing more about your local geology (are you in a coal mining area ?) I'd not be 100% certain that it is coal as it may be an old cinder path.
