We have bought a house with a big cherry tree out front and I would be very, very grateful if anyone could tell me what type of cherry it is and whether the cherries are in any way edible. I'm attaching photos below. Thank you!!!!

I'm no expert but it looks like a Wild Cherry:

I pretty sure all cherries are edible, just that a lot of them taste really bitter. A good way to tell if the birds are going for them now, they will be sweet. The birds leave the bitter ones alone unless there is nothing else for them.

Taste one and see, I hope @Zigs can confirm there is no harm in trying one.

PS: welcome on board, I see you joined in 2008 but this is your first post! That must be some kind of record :)

Aw thanks JWK. Yes, I don't have any memory of joining - it was very strange when I tried to register today and it said I was already registered.

I'm pretty sure you're right that it's a wild cherry. The birds don't seem to be going for it at all, so I guess that's a bad sign.

    I'll try one.

I've sometimes popped a cherry in my mouth when passing good looking trees, you'll know in an instant if it's OK :)

Ok, they're sour but not bitter - stewed fruit ahoy! Thanks both of you so much for your help.
