I'm the same as Shiney when it comes to personal phones, and like his my phone didn't cost an arm and a leg or is on a contract. I use it for talking to people to and, on the rare occasion, texting to them, but I'd rather talk to a person than text as it's more "human".
I do have a modern all singing all dancing phone for work purpose but that is paid for by the Client and I will gladly give it back when I finish working for them. But again, I try not to use it unless I have to as I prefer to talk to people face to face.
One of my Junior Managers at the last company I worked for full time had 5 personal contract phones and came to me wanting a raise because he was finding it difficult to maintain the expensive contracts............he didn't get the raise and reduced his phones to just the one after we'd had a heart to heart talk. Six months later he actually thanked me because he was so much more financially better off!!:snork:

    Well,
now there's a coincidence! Had a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 delivered this morning. It's been registered, etc and is going through it's hoops and should be up and running by tomorrow afternoon. Got an amazing deal with Orange ( been with them since the age of 3 months and got a Loyalty package that seems too good to be true). How can they GIVE a smartphone like that to me for free???
Anyway, wish me luck as I try to navigate my way around it. Want to take it on holiday to St Lucia.
Is it any use taking my laptop? The hotel has offered free WIFI ( din't know what that's all about either),
    Jenny

You started early with a phone, Jenny!!:heehee: And you know what they say about something being too good to be true.............it usually is too good to be true:snork:
The actual manufacture of the modern phone is done in dimes because of the mass manufacturing techniques. The cost comes from the softwear and the chains of companies involved in selling you the phone and contract.
One huge company that was client of mine had the clever method of inventing companies within itself [which in reality were just internal Departments of the Company]. One company would buy a huge number of the phones for literally pennies for each unit and sell in on to the next company [upping the price], the second company would insert some [but not all] softwear into the phone and then sell it onto the next company [upping the price]. This would carry on through eight companies, all within the same Company, each upping the price, with the final company either packaging and selling the phone under the main Company's brand or selling them onto to other companies. That practice still continues and the Owner of the company retired a Billionaire. The same goes for phone chargers, they are bought for pennies per unit from the manufacturer and sold on for around £20 onwards......easy money.:coffee:

Jenny, if you have a safe in the hotel room then by all means take your phone and laptop. Otherwise, don't. You don't need either when out and about and there are cases of mugging for those sort of items (nowhere near as bad as some of the islands).

Just a tip - don't go to the waterfall at Anse La Raye unless escorted by a guide.

When I bought my phone it was £2.95 including charger and delivery!!! Carphone Warehouse had purchased 100,000 phones for very little (as ARMANDII says) and had sold nearly 80,000 of them. When I contacted them they just wanted to offload the rest, at cost, to clear stock and get some extra cashflow. :blue thumb:
