Please help. We bought our house a couple of years back and finally got onto doing the back garden which was a jungle. Everything was over grown and there was a lot of rubbish. We have pretty much got rid of everything, including a lot of bricks from under the very uneven grassy area, which we also dug up a year ago. The aim then was to have artificial grass laid for our 3 young children.
We removed the turf, stones, bricks, weeds and everything else from the ground leaving just the soil. We covered this with 5 bags of mot type 1 as the first step for the artificial grass and got it fairly level.
And…this is as far as we got, apart from building a small decking area to the side so we have somewhere to sit. We are now thinking of laying real grass and not sure what to do as we have all this aggregate now covering the ground.
    Any help would be great.

I should mention I also put a weed membrane down before the aggregate.

    Hi,

Can we ask how big is the area is as not sure if you mean 5 of the small handi bags of Mot1 or the large bulk bags ?

Either way if you laid a membrane it should be easy enough to cleanly remove the Mot1 and then prepare the soil ready for the turf.

If the area is small then possibly artificial grass may still be the better option ?

FYI there is a Lawns section to the forum which contains lots of good advice.

Yes it was the large dumpy bags. We used 5 of them and got it fairly level probably could have done with more at the time. It’s around 50m of area to be turfed.

Think it depends on the time and cost to remove all that mot1 as to the cost of using turf or artificial.

What made you change your mind ?

If you do go for turf, once the mot1 and membrane are removed , if you have a decent depth of soil then it should be fine.
